Having a Voice
Presentation of the training course
A core aspect of working with young people in The South is their need to have a voice in their wellbeing and the development of their societies. The impact of power differentials both locally and in world affairs impedes their voice getting heard. These issues can bemirrored within and between the agencies seeking to help them. This learning programme will focus on how individuals and groupsenable and inhibit people having a voice and being heard. Participants will be given the opportunity to explore these issues in relationto the complex relationships involved in international development. This will include reflecting on how young people in the South canhave a voice, the context of the ‘helping organisation’, how inherent power differences can be played out by NGOs in their attempts toempower others, and how the same issues manifest within and between organisations.
Learning outcomes
Participants will have a better understanding of individual and group processes in:
- Having a voice
- Helping others have a voice
- Building and maintaining dialogue
- How role and status impact on power and influence
- How role anxiety impacts on being heard and listening
Learning methods
The workshop will use models from group theory, sociological theory of power, and organisational development perspectives. It will be
participative and focus on the learning needs of participants as they arise. Participants will be encouraged to apply the models and issues arising to their own work contexts. We will use exercises, discussion, small and large group work supported by short presentations of
relevant models.
